This month, London played host to a plethora of events in the arts calendar, with the London Design Festival and London Fashion week colliding in a star-studded supernova.
At Fashion Insider, we’re all about supporting both established and emerging talent, so when we heard about the London College of Contemporary Arts showcase at LCCA Fest at The Vinyl Factory, Soho, there was a bit of a jazz hands moment at our Wigmore Street office.
As part of the British Fashion Council’s official schedule listings, the LCCA brought its finest graduates of fashion, graphic design and digital art to the table, bringing creatives together with fashion and creative industry professionals, employers, collaborators, alumni and media, creating opportunities for talent discovery, recruitment, partnerships and future creative collaborations.
Which, of course, is the name of the game.
The one-day, industry-facing event brought together graduating talent across Fashion, Graphic Design and Computer Games Art, combining a curated graduate exhibition, live fashion show, industry sessions and networking reception. Students presented throughout the event and discussed their work with guests, providing direct opportunities for industry professionals to discover emerging talent.
The evening culminated in a live fashion show featuring selected graduating fashion designers and recent graduates, presenting a curated selection of student looks on the runway.
The event demonstrated the increasingly fluid boundaries between creative disciplines, highlighting the ways in which fashion, visual communication, digital creativity, technology and gaming intersect within contemporary creative practice. The daytime programme included a series of industry and subject-specific sessions designed to give students further opportunities to engage with creative professionals. The programme included a Pinterest × LCCA Industry Talk, alongside programme sessions focused on Fashion, Graphic Design and Computer Games.
Lucy London, Academic Dean of Creative Industries, said: “I am so proud to be able to bring together education and the world of industry, to create what I like to call, ‘Edustry’. A large part of succeeding in the workplace is creating valuable connections and networking – ‘soft skills’ which are regularly overlooked at undergraduate level. So often students are thrown into the workplace with very little professional exposure or idea of how to navigate their chosen industry, which can be a real disadvantage and can hold them back.”
With the current challenges facing graduates and the increasingly competitive job market, I believe it’s more important than ever that professional preparation is embedded within creative education. Students need more than just talent; they need to understand how to present themselves, communicate professionally and approach an industry brief with confidence. Those first impressions can make a real difference when it comes to securing the creative opportunities they want. I’m passionate about ensuring that every student has the opportunity to develop their skills, build their confidence and understand what it takes to progress into the industry. My aim is to give our students the practical experience, professional insight and confidence they need to build a career they are genuinely passionate about.”
